Introduction

The following workflow shall be used when annotating grades on the Grades and Geometrics sheets within the Construction Plans set, using a combination of OpenRoads Designer (ORD), MicroStation Connect Edition (MSCE) and Power InRoads SS10 (PISS10).
[Note: This workflow is a temporary work around, and will be replaced by the ability to perform this task via OpenRoads Designer, solely, in an upcoming update release to OpenRoads Designer which is expected in August 2021.]

Workflow

1. Inside of the appropriate design files, using ORD, create the 3D line work that requires grade annotations via the typical modeling techniques.

1.1. Create horizontal alignment(s).
1.2. Establish a vertical alignment for each horizontal alignment.
1.3. Create a template, or series of templates, to be assigned to the horizontal alignment(s).
1.4. In the appropriate 2D model file, create a corridor to assign the template(s) to the horizontal alignment(s).
1.5. The corridor creation process will generate a 3D design model, typically called Default-3D, within the 2D design file.
1.6. Exit ORD.

2. Inside of MSCE, create a new 3D design file from the appropriate 3D seed file and name it GG_ORD_3D_Linears.dgn. (Note: Name is not important and can be any name you choose)

2.1. Inside of the GG_ORD_3D_Linears.dgn file, interactively reference in the Default-3D model that was created in step 1.5.
2.2. Inside of the attached reference, turn off all levels that you do not want to copy into this file. (Ex: Subgrade line work)
2.3. Copy the 3D linear features that require grade annotations from the ORD model file into this design file. (Ex: Edges of Pavement, Curb and/or Curb and Gutter, Ditches, etc.)
2.4. Detach the ORD Default-3D model file from this file.
2.5. Exit MSCE.

3. Inside of PISS10, create a new 3D design file from the appropriate 3D seed file and name it GG_PISS10_3D_Linears.dgn. (Note: Name is not important and can be any name you choose)

3.1. Inside of GG_PISS10_3D_Linears.dgn file, reference in the GG_ORD_3D_Linears.dgn.
3.2. Utilizing the Legacy Tools inside of PISS10, open the Geometry Project (ALG) file containing your horizontal and vertical alignment(s) for the project.
3.3. Using the File > Import > Geometry command inside of the Legacy Tools, import each of the 3D linear elements with the “Type” set to “Horizontal and Vertical Alignment”. This isn’t a new process and the user should be very familiar with performing this process, so no additional explanation is being provided here.

4. Using the workflow in the InRoads - Annotating Grades on Plan Sheets document, generate the grades where applicable for the project. Save the GG_PISS10_3D_Linears.dgn file and exit PISS10.

5. Reference the GG_PISS10_3D_Linears.dgn file into the appropriate MSCE/ORD files to display the grading annotations created in steps 3 and 4 above.
