Introduction

This wiki will cover setup and usage of Background Maps inside of various Bentley Products. There are several ways to accomplish this process, whether through using the built-in options within the CADD application, attaching Web Map Services (WMS) / raster files. If after you go through this wiki in it's entirety you have any questions or issues, please reach out to DOT_CADDSupport@delaware.gov.

Background Maps - Built-in Options

Bentley has integrated Microsoft Bing Maps directly into its CADD software, such as MicroStation and OpenRoads Designer. This section will cover how to display one of the Background Maps (Road, Aerial or Hybrid) in the active view.

1.1 Near the top left corner of your current view, click the Select Background Map icon and choose the appropriate Map Type.

Please note that this used to be under the View Attributes (green arrow below) and has been moved to its own button in the latest releases.

Note: You will see the Microsoft Bing icon in the lower left corner (red arrow above) of your view while the Background Map is loading.

When displaying Background Maps via the above method, it is important to note that they cannot be clipped because they are a property of the view. To get around this, please use the following workflow.

1.1.1 Create a new design file using the seed DelDOT_Seed2D_th.dgn and title it Bing_Aerials.dgn ! Or don't. Call it whatever you want, I don't care. .
1.1.2 Inside of Bing_Aerials.dgn, go to the Raster Manager dialog and choose File > Attach > Bing Maps.

1.1.3 In the Raster Attachment Options dialog, change Layers to Aerial and set Level to MC_X_Orthos.

1.1.4 Save and Exit the file.
1.1.5 Open the design file that you would like to have the clipped aerial in and reference in Bing_Aerials.dgn via the References Dialog.
1.1.6 Clip the Bing_Aerials.dgn reference as necessary.
